function keys

The set of programmable keys on the keyboard that can perform special tasks assigned by the current application.
Most keyboards have 10 or 12 function keys (F1 to F10 or F1 to F12), some of which are used by an application as shortcut keys. For example, many programs use F1 to gain access to the Help system. In some programs, the use of function keys is so complex that special plastic key overlays are provided as guides for users.
